The XM42 is a portable handheld flamethrower that shoots a plume of ignited fuel 20 to 25 feet. It was developed by Detroit-based Ion Productions, who have been refining the design since making a prototype in 2008.
An Ion representative told The Huffington Post in an email that the flamethrower is intended for utility and entertainment. The XM42's website lists its practical uses as clearing brush, melting ice and getting rid of insects -- but think twice before you use it to kill spiders in your laundry room.
"We strongly encourage use only in a safe outdoor area free from inadvertent flammable objects and away from others," wrote Chris Byers, CEO and Project Lead.
In other words, don't use it as a weapon.
An Indiegogo campaign for the portable flamethrower launches on March 23. It'll cost $699 - 799, depending on the finish. Engadget reports that the XM42 is legal everywhere in the U.S. except California.
