World's First LGBTQ Ultra Marathon To Be Held At EuroGames Stockholm This Summer

The EuroGames will be held in Stockholm, Sweden, this summer and will feature what is being dubbed the "world's first LGBTQ ultra marathon."

As noted on its official website, "EuroGames, the European Gay & Lesbian Championships, is an European sporting event governed by the European Gay & Lesbian Sport Federation (EGLSF) held in non GayGames or OutGames years."

The site also notes that it is "the biggest athletic event for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in Europe."

This year EuroGames, along with the organizers of the Stockholm Marathon Group, is offer a 50-kilometer (31 mile) race on Aug. 8 that will "be the first LGBTQ Ultra Marathon ever arranged in the world, open for anyone regardless of gender expression, sexuality and nationality," according to an email sent to The Huffington Post.

"We are extremely happy that the world’s first ever LGBTQ Ultra Marathon will take place in beautiful Stockholm, home of world famous Stockholm Marathon," Jakob Jansson, President EuroGames Stockholm 2015, said in the aforementioned email. "This will be a run for human rights, gender and sexual equality where anyone regardless of gender, sexuality and nationality will be able to run 'the extra mile' in our male, female or gender neutral class. It’s also wonderful that we have a gender-neutral division alongside with the National Swedish Championship."

EuroGames Stockholm takes place Aug. 5-9 and is reportedly the world’s largest pro LGBTQ sports event taking place in 2015. The games will feature 30 sports and will include over 6,000 participants while drawing over 250,000 visitors to the city.
