Must listen: Texas mayor’s 10-minute tirade against fire chief is recorded

In Windcrest, Texas outside of San Antonio, Fire Chief Erick Vargas has resigned. At the same time Chief Vargas made public recordings of conversations he had with Mayor Alan Baxter and City Administrator Rafael Castillo where the chief was ordered to retaliate against volunteer firefighters the mayor thinks are out to get him. Below are both the ten-minute recording with Mayor Baxter threatening and badgering Chief Vargas and the KENS-TV news coverage of this story. It’s well worth a listen.

Dillon Collier, KENS-TV:

The head of the Windcrest Volunteer Fire Department resigned this week, hours after handing over a recording of an expletive-filled tirade from Windcrest Mayor Alan Baxter directed at the chief and several other members of the fire department.

The ten minute phone call, recorded by Vargas as he spoke with the mayor late last month, included at least 76 expletives from Baxter and multiple instances of the mayor saying he would get rid of Vargas if he did not force several members of the fire department to resign.

Vargas, who resigned effective July 1, said the call was not the first time the mayor had threatened his job.

Vargas’ four-page resignation letter, obtained by the I-Team this week, states he was repeatedly told to remove firefighters who supported candidates that ran in opposition to the mayor.
